William Newman Koontz

March 12, 1930 — February 27, 2007

KOONTZ, William Newman, died February 27, 2007, at home. “Bill” was born March 12, 1930, at Tampico in Grainger County. He served with the 1st Marine Division in Korea and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 2 Battle Stars. He was a member of Clover Hill Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also a Boy Scout Institutional Representative of East TN, receiving the Silver Beaver award, and coached youth baseball teams. He retired from the U. S. Postal Service with 36 years of service and was employed by Krogers for 13 years. Mr. Koontz was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. J. L. and Mattie Bean Koontz; brothers, Carl, Herbert, John and Roy. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Betty Crye Koontz; sons, Danny (Robin) Koontz, Benny and one much loved grandson, Adam Koontz; sisters, Tressie Keyes of OH, Margaret Leatherwood of Sevierville. Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Thursday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Gilliland officiating. The interment service will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Clover Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville.
