Walter Lenoir Green

Walter Lenoir Green, age 87 of Friendsville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at his home. He was born in Alcoa on March 12, 1924, the fifth child of John and Verdie Effler Green and is a descendant of the Oliver Family of Cades Cove. He was a proud member of the greatest generation. He served as a flight engineer and gunner on a B27 aircraft with the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, he began a career as a general contractor and brick/stone mason that lasted for some 40 years. He also taught building trades at Lanier High School for a brief time and later in life, built and ran Greenstone Trout Farm until his retirement. He was a hard worker all his life and loved to dance and work in his flower beds and garden. He was a charter member of the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Club and the Everett Senior Ballroom Dance Club. He was a 50 year member of the Kerbela Shrine Temple, New Providence Lodge and Prudence Order of Eastern Star. He was also a member of the Cades Cove Preservation Association, the Oliver Family Reunion Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and American Legion. He served two terms as county commissioner of Blount County. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Verdie Effler Green; the mother of his children, Nina Pearl James Green; his wife, Dr. Mary Cragan Green; a daughter, Peggy Lynn Green; two brothers, John Green and Homer Green; and three sisters, Edna Green, Thelma Davis, and Mildred Myers. He is survived by his long time companion, Brenda Richardson; two daughters, Brenda and Mitch Russell of Maryville and Nina Kay Knight and Wallace Turner of Lenoir City; a son, Wesley and Debbie Green of Knoxville; two grandsons, Richard and Yvonne Carnes of Townsend and L. W. Green of Knoxville; four great grandchildren, Halli, Braden, Kinsi, and Sophi Carnes of Townsend; two brothers, Howard and Jo Green of Alcoa, and Arthur Eugene and Ruth Green of Walhalla, SC; three sisters, Ethel Derrick of Illinois, Frances and John Pritchard of Alabama, and Helen and Herbert Bell of Alcoa; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. He will be missed by all that knew him. The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. Saturday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home with a memorial service to follow at 6:00 p.m. with Jerry Hardwick officiating.
