CURTIS, Velma Tipton, age 90 of Knoxville, who was born October 3, 1912, departed this life on Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Farragut Health Care Center. Velma was raised in Maryville and retired from ALCOA, where she was employed as a secretary to the Works Manager. During her lifetime, she traveled extensively. For several years, she was the care giver of her wheel-chair bound sister, Nell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mollie Farr and James M. Tipton, who owned and operated the “James M. Tipton General Merchandise” store in West Maryville; sisters, Nell Harrison and Grace Bailey; brothers, Paul and Roy Tipton; nephew, Rex Reed Tipton; nieces, June Taylor and husband Lee Taylor and Jean Williams. Survivors are nieces, Jacqueline and husband James A. Newman, Joan Hess all of Knoxville, Jennie Lynn McCarter, Judy Ann McCune; nephew, James R. Tipton all of Ft. Wayne, IN, Lynnie and Tommy Sproles of Elizabethton, Mathney Reed Tipton of Charlotte, SC, Rebecca Lawless of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Katherine Taylor of Ft. Wayne, IN; great nieces and great nephews, Harry and Diane Newman of Maryville, Teressia Blair of Atlanta, Sandra and Tom McCarter, Linda Deckard all of Maryville, Jerry and Karen Taylor of Winston Salem, NC, James and Denise Hess of Brentwood, Fred and Margie Hess of Knoxville; several great great nieces and great great nephews and one great great great niece. Family and friends will meet at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Magnolia Cemetery in Maryville, for a graveside service with Rev. Craig Carlson officiating and Kimberly Juday singing the Lord’s Prayer.
