Thomas Tilden Evans, Jr.

Thomas Tilden Evans, Jr. - age 66 of Maryville, passed away quietly at home on Sunday evening, September 7, 2003. He was a 1959 Alumnus of Maryville College and a lifetime patron of the Maryville College program of Fine Arts, especially the concert choir. He was a mainstay of the Historic College Hill Neighborhood Association in Maryville. Tom taught Literature for 26 years in the Oakland Public Schools in New Jersey. He was a member, the organist and the choir director at the Ponds Community Church in Oakland for 22 years. Having been extremely active for many years, he was most recently the Dean of the Knoxville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He had also been the organist at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection. Tom’s love and passion for music and the arts permeated and energized his life. He retired to live in Maryville and served Maryville College as both the Administrative Director of MACCO and the Fine Arts Assistant for External Relations. In 1983, Tom was named to Who’s Who in the East for achievements and significant contributions in his fields of endeavor. In March, 2003, he received the Maryville College “Distinguished Concert Choir Alumni Award”. Tom was born in Miami, Florida and is survived by his sister Ann Howard of Miami, brother Nicholas Evans of Dallas, Georgia, and nephews Darren, Nicholas, Jeffrey and Thomas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Maryville College Concert Choir, The Orchestra at Maryville College or the Blount Memorial Hospice Mercy Fund, Maryville, TN 37804. One of Tom’s favorite sayings and one he e-mailed as recently as last month is, “Life is good! Be grateful for everything...family, friends, health, peace...be thankful for goodness, kindness, and thrill in the glory of each season that we live with Him - both now and forever.” A memorial service will be held at a later date.
