Susie Johnson Irwin, born August 2, 1917 at Maynardville, TN, died December 18, 2002 at Asbury Health Care Center, Maryville, TN after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents O. G. and Maude Cox Johnson, husband Frank E. Irwin, brothers Clonnie, Cluster, Grader, Bondon, and Hollis, and sisters Zettie Gardner and Lois Russell. She was retired from the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools where she was a librarian and previously taught in the Anderson and Union County School Systems. She was active in professional and community service and had been selected as Volunteer of the Year at Asbury Center prior to moving there. Survivors include: sons and daughters-in-law Gordon and Kay of Maryville and John and Sue, Hoover, AL, grandchildren, Aimée Dukes and husband Steve, Nashville, Katherine Thomas and husband Russell, Atlanta, GA, David Irwin, Susan Irwin, and Stacie Irwin, Hoover, AL, sisters- in-law Grace Margrave, Maryville, Jessie Johnson, Maynardville, special niece Mary Waters and husband Lester, Maryville, and 11 other nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Walter Barton, Jr. at the Andersonville Cemetery, Andersonville, TN at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21. Family and friends may call at the home of son Gordon in Maryville between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20. The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers be directed to Berea College, Berea, KY, or Andersonville United Methodist Church, 3940 Andersonville Highway, Andersonville, TN 37705.
