Snell Austin Mills

September 12, 1933 — June 27, 2009

Snell Austin Mills, Jr., 75, died on Saturday, June 27, 2009, following a sudden illness. He was born in Brewster, Florida, on September 12, 1933, and moved to Inverness in 1936. He graduated from Citrus High School in 1951, Maryville College in 1955, and received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Alabama in 1965. He worked in the field of education for 30 years, and retired from the Dekalb County School system in Georgia in 1988. After retirement, he returned to Inverness to operate the family orange grove. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Olivia Vawter Mills, his mother Louise Mills, his children, Sharon Louise Mills (daughter), Ed Hensley (son-in-law), Snell Austin Mills III (son), and Carrie Eby Mills (daughter-in-law), as well as his aunt, Tommie Lee Hagan, and sister-in-law, Sara Vawter Lyons, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service was held in Inverness, FL. Family and friends will meet at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Magnolia Cemetery for a graveside service with Rev. Ron Matthews officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service in the William R. Allen Fellowship Hall at Broadway United Methodist Church.
