HURST, Shirley J., age 87 of Cloverhill Ridge Road, a teacher, writer and editor, died Monday morning, October 14, 2002, at Blount Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Hurst was the widow of Charles M. Hurst, longtime shift supervisor at ALCOA’s West Plant. A direct descendant of four passengers on the Mayflower, Mrs. Hurst was the former Esther Shirley Jackson. She was born February 13, 1915, in Windsor Locks, CT, where her father and brother both served as superintendent of schools. Her sister, the late Dr. Elizabeth Jackson, was head of the Maryville College English Department for several years. Mrs. Hurst came to Maryville to attend Maryville College. After graduation, she taught in the Maryville School system before marrying Mr. Hurst in 1940. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, where she taught a college-age Sunday School class for many years. She also developed the church’s library, worked in it for 12 years, and helped establish several others in the association. She also wrote a history of the Chilhowee Association. In later years, she was freelance editor and did extensive work for the University of Tennessee Press. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bruce Carlson of Sneads Ferry, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles J. and Donna Hall Hurst of Lancaster, TN; a granddaughter, Jennifer Ramey of Jacksonville, NC; a grandson, Beau Ramey of Whiteville, NC; and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Scott officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Clark’s Grove Cemetery for the interment service.
