Roy Lawrence Goddard, 91, of Greenback went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday morning, August 20, 2019. He was born at the Blount County home of his parents, Samuel and Kate Hall Goddard, on June 18, 1928 with his cousin, Dr. Joseph Hall, serving as the attending physician. After graduating from Greenback High School, Roy attended the University of Tennessee and served as the 1954 State President of the Tennessee Young Farmers & Homemakers. He is retired from the Tennessee Farmer’s Cooperative, his lifelong love of farming and his service to others.
Throughout his life, Roy was a leader in the Brick Mill and Greenback communities. He was on the committee that brought telephone service to the area and served as an officer/board member for the Baker’s Creek Cemetery Association, Brick Mill and Greenback community clubs, Greenback Historical Society, Greenback Museum, and Lions Club. He was a founding member and EMT of the Greenback Rescue Squad, a former Fire Chief of the Greenback Volunteer Fire Department, a board member for Loudon County United Way and a first aid and CPR instructor for the American Red Cross. Roy also served as President and Board Member of the Goddard Historical & Genealogical Society. In addition, he was a founding member of the Tennessee Federation of Fire Chaplains and State Chaplain of the Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads for 17 years and founder of the TARS Honor Guard unit. At the time of his death, Roy was a proud board member of the Tellico Area Services System.
Roy’s most devoted life’s work was as a faithful Christian. He was an active member of the Nelson Chapel Church of Christ and served as an Elder for 46 years. He devoted his life to study of God’s word and served as an example for all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years Betty Willocks Goddard; brothers-in-laws, Don and Bruce Willocks; grandparents, Martin & Sarah Johnson Goddard and William & Elizabeth Lane Hall; double-first cousin and best friend, Ralph Goddard Hall; nephew, Dale Felty; great-niece, Riley Elizabeth Willocks.
He is survived by his children, Stanley & Ramona Goddard Best, Roger Goddard and Michael & Teresa Goddard Rocco; grandchildren, Ryan & Casey Best McCord and Ryan Boyd Best & Emily Bednarzyk; great-grandchildren, Lily Belle McCord, his little sweetheart, and soon to arrive Ellis Cole Best. He also leaves behind sisters-in-laws Mary and JoAnn Willocks; nephew Scott & Heidi Willocks; great-nephew Parker Alan Willocks.
The family will receive friends from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 24th at Maryville Church of Christ with the funeral service at 11:00 AM with Arthur Pigman officating. The graveside will follow at Nelson Chapel Church of Christ Cemetery, 5039 Six Mile Rd., Maryville. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Nelson Chapel Cemetery Fund, Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads and the Greenback Museum Building Fund.
