Romeo Franklin Greene, age 77 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007. Romeo served in the Armed Forces and was a graduate of Chicago Technical Institute with a degree in BSME. For years Romeo was an active member of New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville. He served as Boy Scout Leader for Troop 80, served as Superintendent of the Sunday School at Home Avenue Chapel, and was active with the local Boys Club. In 1961, Romeo was named Blount County’s Outstanding Young Man of the Year by the Jaycees for his support and service to his community. He was employed at Y-12 in Oak Ridge for over 35 years where he played a major role in the design of the Apollo 11 moonbox which was used to transport the first lunar samples from the moon. Romeo was one of the first dozen Union Carbide Engineers to be issued a P.E. license by the State of Tennessee in 1965. His hobbies included basketball, softball, hiking, painting, guitar, music and fishing. Survivors include daughters, Cathy Barham of Knoxville, Gail Toler of Georgia; grandson, Greg Stipes; great granddaughter, Samantha Stipes both of Georgia; brothers and sisters, Sam Greene, Ben Greene, Dorothy Gregory, Gaynell Holstein, Judy Farrell all of Maryville, and Sylvia McNeill of Mississippi, along with several nieces and nephews; wife, Janie Greene of Knoxville. Romeo touched many lives and will sadly be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Receiving of friends will be Wednesday, June 27, from 6-7:30 p.m. with a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel, Maryville. The public is invited to pay their respects at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in Maryville.
