He loved the grateful hearts of all those who recognized his service as a World War II veteran. He also like the attention, the handshakes, and the free food on Veterans Day. Thank you to Applebee’s, Chili’s, and IHOP!
Robert was drafted into the US ARMY at the end of his Junior Year of high school. He was able to complete his senior year and graduate by attending summer school before marching off to war in August 1943.
Robert served with the 289th Engineer Combat Battalion XXI Corps of the Seventh Army. He fought during the invasion of Germany specifically at the Ludendorff Bridge. It was the last bridge standing over the Rhine River between the Allies and the Nazi’s. After the war, he went to college and graduated from The University of Maryland with a major in History and did graduate work at Towson University in Political Science. He was a retired Montgomery County Public Schools teacher. He taught for 30 years.
