Rev. Joseph T. Nickell

Reverend Joseph T. Nickell Joseph Travis Nickell, retired Baptist pastor of Maryville, TN, passed away February 26, 2014, from complications of Alzheimers disease. He was 85. Born in the Sugar Creek community of Hickman County, TN, the youngest of eleven children of Marvin Byron and Sula Travis Nickell, he graduated from Hickman County High School and the University of TennesseeKnoxville. He earned graduate degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.He served as associate pastor of the Whitehaven Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, and was Pastor of First Baptist Church of Monticello, Kentucky, First Baptist Church of Crossville, Tennessee, and Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Maryville, Tennessee where he retired as Pastor Emeritus.He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, serving as Chaplain and a member of the Knoxville Exchange Club. He was preceded in death by sisters, Martha Warren Kelsey, Mary Rochelle, Anne Reeves and Amy Graves; brothers, Paul Nickell, Hugh Nickell, Marcus Nickell, Jim Nickell and Captain Charles Nickell, who was a fighter pilot lost at sea during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ruth Robinson Nickell of Maryville, children, sons, Tim Nickell and his wife, Pat, of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Mark Nickell and his wife Kaye, of Franklin, Tennessee, and daughter LuAnne Nickell Prevost of Knoxville, Tennessee, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, and one sister, Christine McClannahan of Centerville, Tennessee. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 8 at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville at 4 P.M. (EST) followed by receiving of friends. A graveside service and interment will follow at a later date in the Charles L. Nickell Memorial Park in Centerville, TN. His grandchildren will serve as Pallbearers.
