Nancy Hubbart Baird

Nancy Hubbart Baird, of Maryville, passed away on November 30 at Shannondale Retirement Community. She was born in Delaware, Ohio on December 28, 1919. After graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University, she worked in Ohio, Chicago, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, before heading to Japan with the American Red Cross after World War II. Upon returning to her hometown, her path crossed with that of Boydson Baird, whom she had known since high school. After their marriage in 1947, Nancy was a homemaker and volunteer, caring for her husband and their three children in Davidson, North Carolina, Williamsburg, Virginia, and in Maryville. She eventually added the job of librarian with the Blount County School System and at John Sevier Elementary School. She received a Master's Degree in Education from Union College at the age of 61. Upon retirement, Nancy remained involved in various community activities; she was especially active at New Providence Presbyterian Church where she served as both Elder and Deacon. She enjoyed traveling to see her grandchildren and other family members and loved their visits to see her. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Faith Marvin Hubbart and Dr. Henry Clyde Hubbart and her sister and brother-in-law, Faith Hubbart Shier and Lowell Shier. She is survived by her husband, Boydson H. Baird; children, Faith Baird Carpenter and her husband, Kyle; Weldon Baird; Annie Baird Frick and her husband, Jay; grandchildren David, his wife, Kate, and Mary Carpenter; Laura, Ross, Henry and Bradley Baird; Maggie Frick; sister Marion Hubbart Shipps and her husband, Frazier. Several nieces and nephews also mourn her passing. Nancy's family will always be grateful for the care given by the staff at Shannondale during her last years. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to these three institutions near and dear to Nancy: Maryville College Scots Club, 502 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, Maryville, TN 37804; New Providence Presbyterian Church, 703 West Broadway Avenue, Maryville, TN 37801; or her alma mater, Ohio Wesleyan University, Mowry Alumni Center, Delaware, OH 43015. Following a private interment, a Memorial Service will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 6 at 3:00 p.m., the Reverend Dr. Emily J. Anderson and the Reverend Dr. Stan Rushing officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church in Westminster Hall.
