Nancy Dean Long

January 14, 1922 — May 5, 2008

Nancy Dean Long, of Maryville TN, widow of Vincent J. Long, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2008 after a long illness. Mrs. Long (''Nan'') was born on January 14, 1922 in Highland, NY and resided in Long Island, NY, Bethesda, MD, Fort Lauderdale, FL and Banner Elk, NC before moving to Maryville in 2001. She is survived by her three daughters, Susan and her husband Scott Myers of West Hartford CT, Kathy and her husband Bruce Alwood of Maryville TN, and Judy Long of Knoxville, as well as her five loving grandchildren, Kasey, Paige and Moses Alwood of Maryville; and Abby and Jonathan Myers of West Hartford, CT. Nan received her Bachelors' degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz and her Master's in Reading from George Washington University. She taught reading in public schools for many, many years and then had a second career in public relations/sales, running a business with her husband in Ft. Lauderdale. Nan was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Ft. Lauderdale where she ran their bookstore and was active in Cursillo, even serving as a Rectora. She was most recently a devoted member of Fairview United Methodist Church in Maryville. She was also active in Bible Study Fellowship in Knoxville and The Daughters of the King in both Florida and North Carolina. Nan lived at the Shannondale community where she was active in leading bible studies and worship services and enjoyed playing bridge and visiting with her many friends. She was a ''people person'' who loved socializing and made friends wherever she went, touching the lives of many people. She loved to read, play bridge, dance, and travel, play the piano and go out to dinner and remained extremely active and independent until her health began to decline in 2006. Then she moved into her final career as a prayer warrior. Nan will always be remembered for her caring, compassionate nature and her deep love of God. Her faith was central in all her actions and in the way she lived her life. Nan will be dearly missed by all her family and friends. There will be a celebration of her life and legacy on Friday, May 9, 2008 at Fairview United Methodist Church, 2508 Old Niles Ferry Road, Maryville, with the receiving of friends from 4 – 5 PM and the celebration of her life at 5 PM. In lieu of flowers, and in honor of her interests, contributions may be made in Nan's memory to ''Mobile Meals'' PO Box 51650, Knoxville, TN 37950 or ''Samaritan Hands'', a non-profit mission agency of Fairview United Methodist, to support their orphanage in Guatemala. Additionally, her daughters would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Shannondale Assisted Living and Blount Memorial Hospital for the special care they provided Nan in the past months. www.mccammonammonsclick.com
