Mercer Davie Cotton passed away February 25, 2013, at Shannondale of Maryville after a long illness with cancer. He was born in Dothan, AL in 1924 and grew up in Montgomery, AL. He joined the Army in 1942, serving in France and Germany during World War II. After returning home in 1945, he attended Auburn University, graduating in 1948 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduating, he came to the Aluminum Company of America in Alcoa where he worked for 38 years. He was transferred to Rockdale, TX in 1962 and returned to Alcoa in 1971 as Safety and Environmental Supervisor. He was a member of the Rotary Club, where he served as president in 1978, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the City of Maryville Board of Zoning Appeals from 1995-2003 and was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church. Mr. Cotton was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ina Mae Jones and George Cotton, Jr. and brother, Kirby Cotton. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Effie Cotton; daughter, Carol Blinkenstofer and husband Conrad; son, William Cotton and wife Christy; grandson, Jarett Cotton; step grandson, Jeffery Arms; step granddaughter, Julie Pitta; great grandson, Jayson Cotton. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the nurses at Shannondale for the love and care given to Mr. Cotton. The entombment service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial services will be held at Shannondale of Maryville at 3:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to your favorite charity.
