Mattie Wilkerson Ayers

Ayers, Mattie Wilkerson passed away Friday August 27th 2010 at her home. She was born September 16, 1931 in Knoxville TN and grew up in the Alcoa community of Calderwood. She was a graduate of Lanier High School. She was a member of Maryville First United Methodist Church and the Garst Sunday School Class for over 50 years. She directed church weddings, served as a youth leader, and sang in the choir. Mattie has been known for her smile, compassion and love for life. She will be greatly missed. Mattie worked in Knoxville and Maryville as a hairdresser. She was most recently employed by Citizens Bank of Blount County. Mattie was preceded in death by her husband Donald L. Ayers’ parents Harold and Margaret Wilkerson and brother Bill Wilkerson. Survivors include: daughter and son in law, Donna and Don Close of Signal Mountain TN, grandsons and wives, Travis and Tina Close of Signal Mountain TN, Todd and Becca Close of Soddy Daisy TN. Great grandchildren are Gavin and Ansley Close and Reid Close. Sister, Nancy Wilkerson of Maryville. Sister in law, Martha Wilkerson of Knoxville, Niece Angelia McMillian and nephew and wife Michael and Marla Wilkerson all of Knoxville, niece, Antonia Ayers Welch of Robbinsville NC. The family would like to offer a special thanks to Dr. Bryan Thompson for his care and compassion. A thank you also goes to her care givers and to Linda, Larry and Cole Whitehead for the special love and care that they gave “Nana”. Funeral Services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Maryville First United Methodist Church with Pastors Brenda and Larry Carroll officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. at the church. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery.
