Mary Jo Hitchcock

June 21, 1919 — March 8, 2005

Mary Jo Hitchcock, age 85, was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1919 and died at the Health Care Center of Shannondale of Maryville on March 8, 2005. Mary Jo attended lower schools in Swarthmore, Montrose High School and Drexel Institute. She received the Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, taught at the University of Maine and the University of Minnesota and retired from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. At the University of Tennessee, she taught in the field of Food Systems Administration in the College of Human Ecology. She is the author of a book in that field and presented papers at both national and international professional meetings. Since retirement, Mary Jo has pursued her special interests in music and art. She was active in the FISH program through Second Presbyterian Church in Knoxville for a number of years. Since moving to Maryville, she had been affiliated with New Providence Presbyterian Church. She is survived by special nephew, E. H. Hitchcock of Knoxville and Nicholas F., also a nephew; great nephews, Edward of Chicago, IL, and John of Washington, DC; great great nephew, Zachary of Washington, DC and several cousins. Other survivors include her friends at Shannondale of Maryville Retirement Center and the caring staff of the Shannondale Health Care Center and many loving friends from all over the country. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at the Shannondale of Maryville Retirement Center on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Dixie Lea Petrey and The Rev. Dr. Emily Anderson officiating. A private service for the family will be held in Pennsylvania at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2200 Sutherland Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37919 or a charity of one’s choice.
