Mary Evelyn Russell Lane died Monday Sept 22, 2003 in Maryville, Tennessee. She had been recovering from surgery at Shannondale Health Center. A resident of Asbury Retirement Center, she was born in Louisville, Tennessee December 14, 1912 and was the daughter of William Edgar Russell and Lida Gamble Russell. She was preceded in death by husband, Henry George Lane, sisters, Beulah and Edna Smith, brothers, Robert and James. Mary Evelyn was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church where she served as an Elder. She was a graduate of Maryville College, member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Alpha Delta Kappa professional teacher sorority and the Blount County Historical society. She taught school for 28 years and was a member and Chairman of the Blount County Board of Education. Among her ancestors were the Reverend Samuel Doak, pioneer Presbyterian East Tennessee church founder, Josias Gamble and several other Revolutionary Soldiers. A friend to all and a teacher of three generations at Union and Alnwick, she enjoyed her family, church, Blount County and her many friends and relatives. She is survived by son, George Henry Lane of Knoxville, daughter, Louise Lane Talley and husband Donald Talley of Maryville and brother, John Russell and wife Jean of Clearwater Florida. Also, sisters-in law, Jane Russell of Troy Ohio, Nina Russell of Maryville and brother- in law, J. Hoge Smith of Virginia. Five grandchildren, Catherine Lane Colocotronis and husband Andrew of Knoxville, Stacey Lane Kline and husband Michael of Penland, North Carolina, Jacklyn Lane of Knoxville, David Allen Talley of Maryville, Donna Talley Russell and husband Mark of Maryville. She enjoyed her great grandchildren, Henry Turner Colocotronis and Edward Ashton Colocotronis of Knoxville, Evelyn Cadalise Kline of Penland, North Carolina, Landon Allen Russell, Talley Lane Russell and Garrett Lynn Russell of Maryville. She is also survived by first cousins, cousins, nieces and nephews. The family will meet friends at New Providence Presbyterian Church in the main Sanctuary at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday the 24th with a Memorial Service at 8:00 p.m. A family burial service will be at 2:00 p.m.at Clover Hill Presbyterian Church. The Reverends Dr. Emily Anderson, Dr. Phillip Bembower and Steve Musick will conduct the service. Assisting in the graveside service will be the Reverend Tom Gilliland of Clover Hill Presbyterian Church.
