Martha O'Connor Purkey

Martha O'Connor Purkey, born June 4, 1929 passed away June 14, 2015 at the age of 86. She was a member of Dotson Memorial Baptist Church but had attended Rescue Mission Baptist Church in later years. She was very proud of being involved in helping open Blount Memorial Hospital in 1947 by helping transport the patients and equipment from Doctors Hospital. She was a 1951 graduate of Ft. Sanders School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse. She retired in 1992 but continued to work part-time until 1996. She was preceded in death by husband, Venus (V.R.) Purkey; parents, Dennis and Ethel O'Connor; sister and best friend, Edith Boling. Survived by son and daughter-in-law, Hank and Jackie Purkey of Friendsville; grandchildren and spouses, Katelyn (Dusty) Bray of Maryville, Dylan and (Haley) Purkey of Madisonville, Alexandra (Randall) Davis of Friendsville, Connor Purkey of Friendsville; great grandchild, Mason Purkey; brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Joyce O'Connor; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donald and Laverne Carpenter; several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all the Nurses and Staff on 1 North at Blount Memorial Hospital for the excellent care and kindness she and the family received. Funeral services will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Stinnett officiating. The interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Shady Grove Cemetery.
