Martha Lynn “Marti” Hamilton

July 6th, 1963 – February 15th, 2023

Martha Lynn “Marti” Hamilton, 59, passed away peacefully on February 15th, 2023, at her home in New Market, TN with her husband by her side. Marti was a life-long East Tennessean and Vols fan, born in Maryville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, attended Maryville City Schools, studied at Hiwassee College, and later, earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from Carson-Newman College.

As a teenager, Marti was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease which permanently changed the course of her life. Throughout many hospitalizations and surgeries, Marti became very knowledgeable and experienced in health care from the patient’s perspective and she wanted to put that experience to work providing compassionate care for others. Upon graduation from Carson-Newman College, Marti became a Registered Nurse. Empathy for the patient was Marti’s top priority as a nurse and she applied her personal experiences as a patient to her work, where she would skip meals and breaks if one of her patients needed help, especially when her patient needed prompt pain management or wound care. She was recognized for her professionalism, care and compassion by her colleagues and earned a performance award from Jefferson Memorial Hospital.

Marti enjoyed camping and fishing and visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park whenever she could. She loved being “Aunt Marti,” giving gifts and having fun with her many nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews, especially at Christmas time.

She was preceded in death by father Eugene Hamilton, mother Martha Goddard Hamilton, brother Thomas Hamilton, and brother Philip Hamilton.

She is survived by her husband Johnny Whitaker, stepson Jesse Whitaker (Kelsey), brother Robert Hamilton (Denise), brother Steven Hamilton (Kimberly), nephews Joe Hamilton (Brooke), Jake Hamilton (Carol), Kelly Hamilton (Cory), Austin Hamilton (Sami), nieces Heather Parente, Holly Hamilton Smith (Adam), Heidi Moses (Kevin), Hillary Waters (Darris), 9 great nieces, 9 great nephews.
