Mark Edward Trekell, P.E., age 42, passed away Friday, October 18, 2002, after a long battle with cancer. Mark was born on April 18, 1960 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Dr. William Van Trekell and Nina Wray Boatwright Trekell. Mark graduated from Dodge City High School in 1978. He briefly attended Dodge City Community Junior College and graduated, with national honors from Kansas State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and expertise in geotechnical design, in 1984. He was also a member of the Chi Epsilon National Civil Honors Society. He was responsible for civil projects in southern California during the 1980’s before returning to Kansas. During his professional career, Mark served as county engineer and the executive officer of the Department of Public Works for several counties in Kansas including; Ford, Meade, Gray, Stevens, and Haskell. He also worked for several consulting firms throughout the state of Kansas. While in East Tennessee, Mark helped lay the foundation work for the Knoxville Convention Center, which completed in 2002. Mark was preceded in death by his older brother, Gregory Van Trekell and his father William Van Trekell, M.D. He is survived by his mother, NinaWray Trekell of Maryville, Tennessee, sister, Melissa Emlyn Trekell, M.D., of Maryville, TN and brother, Stanley Earl Trekell of Lawrence, Kansas, nieces, Erin Olivia Valentine, of Houston, TX and Ashley Dubach Valentine, of Boone, NC, aunt, Shirley Westwood of Cincinnati, OH, aunt, Sharon Kay Boatwright, of Denver, CO, and his grandmother, Rosa Boatwright Criss, of Denver, CO. Mark was a member of Union Baptist Church, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Family members suggest in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Saturday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville. Funeral services and interment will be held in Dodge City, Kansas.
