Marie Elizabeth Colvin

August 8, 1918 — May 22, 2009

Marie Elizabeth Colvin of Maryville went home to be with her Lord on Friday, May 22, 2009, at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville. She was born on August 10, 1918, to Methodist Ministers, the Rev. M.F. Goss and the Rev. Nancy Patterson Goss. She was preceded in death by her husband Tyson Colvin and brother, Estus Goss. She is survived by her beloved care-givers Gerry and R.L. Grindstaff, her god-children Bill Steppe and his wife Susan of Memphis, Donna Steppe Millard and husband Joe of Colorado Springs and Jane Steppe Chastain and husband Roger of Aguanga, California, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. There are very few families in this area whose lives were not touched in some way by Marie. She either taught you or a family member in fifth or sixth grade at Westside or Sam Houston, she played for your wedding or you were one of her many friends. In a very real sense Marie’s children were the students who were lucky enough to be in one of her classes during her 38 years in Maryville or her four years in Roane and Knox counties. She delighted in keeping up with them and their many accomplishments. Many attended the reception for her 90th birthday held last year at Fairview United Methodist Church. Marie had a gift of music which she shared freely. She was the organist at St. John’s United Methodist Church for 30 years, assistant organist and pianist at Fairview United Methodist Church for six years and pianist for the early morning worship service at First United Methodist Church for six years. After she retired from playing for morning worship, she was called back into service by the Shields Sunday School Class at First United Methodist, where she was active in the seniors ministry and the women’s fellowship. A celebration of her life will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the service. The interment will follow at Grandview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church 804 Montvale Station Road Maryville, Tn 37803 in honor of the memory of Marie and Tyson Colvin
