Marguerite Gray Badgett

December 16, 1916 — July 11, 2007

Badgett, Marguerite Gray, age 90 of Maryville, died at her home on July 11, 2007. Marguerite was a long-time resident of Maryville and well-known as an elementary school teacher and for service to her community and to her church, First United Methodist Church of Maryville. She graduated from Maryville College, with graduate studies at The University of Tennessee in the Department of Home Economics, Smith Hughes Course. Marguerite was the first female principal of West Side Elementary School, and later in life taught many years at Fairview Elementary School in Blount County. In addition, she served as president of Chilhowee Club, president of the Blount County Library Board, president of the Maryville Music Club, and president of WSCS (Women’s Society of Christian Service) at First United Methodist Church. Marguerite was a lovely, gentle lady, characterized by quiet sophistication and a perpetual twinkle in her eye. She enjoyed a sense of what was going on behind the veneer of life. She gave five children to the world, and provided the encouragement and support for them to develop and grow. She was married to the late James P. Badgett. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Weaver of Maryville; her son, Tom Badgett and wife June of Lenoir City; and daughters, Katherine Paff and husband Charles of Elkton, Maryland; Rosemary Badgett and Carol Badgett of Prescott, AZ; and, Nan Badgett and husband Jerry Harmon of Tucson, AZ. Her brother and sister-in-law J.N. and Blanche Badgett live in Maryville. Interment was at the family plot at Grandview Cemetery with a memorial service scheduled for 2 p.m., Friday, July 20, 2007 at First United Methodist Church, 804 Montvale Station Road, Maryville.
