Margaret Sue Atchley Rose

September 23, 1917 — August 15, 2020

Margaret Sue (Atchley) Rose, passed at 102 years, 10 months and 23 days peacefully at home surrounded by family on Saturday, August 15th. She was born September 23, 1917 in Maryville to the late Robert and Emma Mae Atchley.

Margaret graduated Everett HS as salutatorian for the Class of 1936; which she was the last surviving member. She began working as a bookkeeper for a local machine shop where she was the only female employee. After taking some business college courses, she became a legal secretary.

Margaret married John Wesley Rose on April 23, 1940. They settled in Blount Hills and reared two children, David and Autumn.

In 1943, she and her family joined Broadway Baptist Church. Margaret soon began working as the secretary and church clerk. She held many positions at the church; Sunday School Teacher for Jr and Sr girls, President of WMU, Sunday School Secretary, Bereavement Committee and Kitchen Committee.

She loved to travel, work crossword puzzles, enjoyed attending and watching Ladies Vols Basketball, Vols Football, and Atlanta Braves.

Margaret was preceded in death by husband, John; siblings Betty Lane, Charles Atchley, and Phill Atchley. She is survived by son John David Rose (Bobbie) and daughter Autumn Rose Luthardt; grandchildren Donna (Scott), Jackie (Joe), Jan (Chris), Kristen (John), Jacob (Tori), and Amber (Alex); great grandchildren Jonathan, Ashley, Morgan, Brooke, Connor, Blayne, Chase, Aaron, Sydney, Sophia, Zack, Jacob, and Adaline; and great-great grandchildren Saylor, Emmabelle, Caroline, Nova, and Willow.

The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to her caregivers Gerry, Bernice, Joanne and Linda for loving and caring for her daily; as well as her devoted friends from Broadway Baptist Church.

Margaret will be laid to rest beside her husband at a graveside service to be held Friday, August 21, at 11AM at Magnolia Cemetery. Following the services, family and friends will gather at Broadway Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
