Krystal Guinevere Wilson Massey

Krystal Wilson Massey, a long-time resident of Oak Ridge, TN, passed away at Asbury Place, Maryville, on September 14, 2014. The youngest of eight children born to John Walter and Orilla Hill Wilson in Point Pleasant, WV, on December 17, 1917, she is preceded in death by her parents and all seven siblings as well as her husband of forty years, Byron Jones Massey and two of her three children, Helen Massey Holmes and Byron Joel Massey. Mrs. Massey was a member of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church in Oak Ridge. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in both Oak Ridge and Kingston, as well as a member of the Oak Ridge Art Guild and ORCMA Guild. A world traveler, Mrs. Massey had visited each continent at least once. Mrs. Massey came to Oak Ridge during WWII with her husband who worked on the Manhattan Project with the Army Corps of Engineers. One of the "Girls of the Atomic City," she was a payroll accountant at the K25 plant. Prior to coming to Oak Ridge, she had been employed as a payroll clerk for Bell Telephone Company and a detective with the Pinkerton Agency in Charleston, WV. She co-owned the Epicurean at Jackson Square in Oak Ridge with her business partner, Ella Gayle and in her retirement volunteered at Methodist Medical Center, Recording for the Blind and the Museum of Atomic Energy. Mrs. Massey is survived by a daughter, Kae Massey Wrinkle and husband Lee Wrinkle of Maryville and son-in-law, Kenneth Holmes of Gaffney, SC. She is also survived by five grand-children: Krystal McRobie of Blacksburg, SC; Miranda Clark and husband Jon Clark of Knoxville; Gregory Bridges and wife Jennifer of Boise, ID; Jacob Holmes and wife Emily of Gaffney, SC and Byron Jones Massey, II, of Maryville. She is survived by ten great-grandchildren: Seth and Ethan McRobie, Anderson and Dane Clark, Jamie Holmes, Julia and Sophia Bridges, and Byron, Christine and Kaitlin Massey. Surviving nieces and nephews are: Jeanne Lampton of Knoxville; Connie Conrad and husband Lyle of Atlanta, GA; Ruth Falor of Columbus, OH; Tom Wilson and wife Gretchen of Purdue, IN; Jim Wilson and wife Saskia of Marrietta, GA; Walter Wilson of Cincinnati, OH; Claude Wilson and wife Lana of Nashville; Mary Anderson of Knoxville; Nancy Wilson of Phoenix, AZ; Don Wilson and wife Vicky of Dowelltown, TN; Ray Hill and wife Pat of Kennebuck, ME; Pat Campbell of Clifton Park, NY and Elaine Massey of Indianapolis, IN. A grave-side service will be held at Roane Memorial Gardens, 1400 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood, TN on Sunday, September 28 at 4:00pm. Memorial gifts may be made to the Episcopal School of Knoxville Scholarship Fund c/o the ESK Development Office, 950 Episcopal School Way, Knoxville, TN 37932. Mrs. Massey was an enthusiastic supporter of ESK having three generations of descendants who were faculty members or students.
