Kathryn Mcculloch Peery

Kathryn McCulloch (Nowell) Peery passed away Sunday, July 17, 2016 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was 72 years old. Dr. Kathryn (Nowell) Peery retired from teaching English literature at Pellissippi State Community College. A highly respected educator, she believed in her students and constantly encouraged them to succeed, for which she was awarded the 2008 National Excellence in Teaching Award. Kathryn was a 1962 graduate of Maryville High School, and she enjoyed staying in contact with her former classmates. She was a state-licensed wildlife rehabilitator who raised, healed, and released thousands of wild animals. She was a Docent at Ramsey House, a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and an avid reader who was actively involved with her book club. Kathryn graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 1966 with a B.A. in French, English, and art, and worked as a medical illustrator with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory following graduation. She went on to earn her PhD in English literature from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. Kathryn was a loving mother and wife who will be deeply missed by her children, husband, family, and friends. She was known for her generosity of spirit, her abiding compassion for the vulnerable, and her belief in kindness towards those most in need. She is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Max McCulloch and Elizabeth Bryan McCulloch; and her grandparents Dr. John Alexander McCulloch and Grace Badgett McCulloch; Robert Bryan and Katie Hughes Bryan. She is survived by her devoted husband Clyde Peery, Jr.; son John Joseph Nowell; daughter Lee (Phillip DePoy) Nowell; brother John (Brenda) McCulloch; cousins Bill (Suzanne) Brown and Susan (John) Hays; mother-in-law Marceil (Clyde, Sr.) Peery; sister-in-law Mary Helen Peery; step-son Ashley (Liesl) Peery; step-daughter Alicia (Bobby) Peery Luttrell; three nieces; and one grandniece. The family wishes to express gratitude and appreciation to the doctors and nurses at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Renal Transplant Department and the University of Tennessee Knoxville Medical Center. The memorial service will be Thursday, July 21st at 2:00 pm at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Maryville, TN. Parking is available at the church and adjacent to McCammon Ammons Click Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Memo: Kidney Patient Fund, Attn: Ed Zavala, 805 Oxford House, 1313 21st Ave. South, Nashville, TN 37232-4745; and Appalachian Bear Rescue, P.O.
