Julia Ann Lawson passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, following a short illness. She was 60 years old.
A native and resident of Maryville, Julia retired in 2020, having taught music in the Maryville school system since 1988, at Fort Craig Elementary, Maryville Middle School, and she served as music specialist at Foothills Elementary School beginning when the school opened in 1995.
Julia earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from Middle Tennessee State University, a master’s degree in choral conducting from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and an Ed.S. in educational technology from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
She was a long-time member of the Knoxville Choral Society and Knoxville Chamber Chorale. She traveled extensively with those groups, performing solo works in Austria, Germany, Italy, Ireland, and Eastern Europe. Julia was also a member of the East Tennessee General Music Educators Association, the National Association for Music Educators and the American Choral Directors Association.
She attended Concord United Methodist Church in Farragut, where she sang in the praise band and for special services.
Julia was born on April 24, 1964, to Daniel Lawson and Peggy Swenson. She was preceded in death by her father, her step-father William Swenson, and several aunts and uncles – Ruth and Earl Hutsell of Maryville and Ken and Lacy Tippins of Charlotte, NC. She is survived by her mother as well as a sister, Jennifer Moore of Maryville; step-mother Gaynell Lawson and step-siblings Bill Swenson, Esther Isles, and Mindy Stooksbury; nephew, Ian Murphy of Knoxville; aunts and uncles – Kathy and Randy Deere of Bowling Green, Kentucky and Claire and Tom Hewitt of Richmond, Virginia; and many cousins.
Friends are welcome to sign the guest register from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Wednesday, January 15th or 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 16th at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Thursday, January 16 at 7:00 PM at Concord United Methodist Church, 11020 Roane Drive, Knoxville, TN. Receiving friends will begin at 6:30 PM preceding the service.
In lieu of flowers, friends and family members are encouraged to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or the Knoxville Choral Society.
