Miss Joyce Peters passed away at Shannondale of Maryville on Sunday, December 21, 2008, at age 81. She was a life-long resident of Friendsville, TN. She was born on January 13, 1927, the daughter of the late Jacob Burton Peters and Lucile Griffitts Peters. Survivors include her sister, Sylvia Springer of Carrollton, GA; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Peters of Tullahoma, TN; an aunt, Maria Peters of South Hampton, PA; nieces and nephews, Sydney Burkley, Tom Leaming, Jr., Leslie Sadler, Jake Peters, Lorie Braly, Stacey Blackmon, and Stephanie Curi; first cousins, Kathleen Long and Bob Griffitts; and fifteen great-nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Fred Greer Peters and niece Jennifer Burk Moore. Miss Peters received her B.A. from Earlham College in Richmond, IN, and later earned her Library of Science degree at University of Tennessee. She began her teaching career at Calderwood, TN, where she served as both teacher and principal. Next, she was a teacher and librarian at Walland High School for many years. She taught one year at Friendsville High School, before moving to William Blount High School where she taught for five years before retiring to take care of her mother. She loved her work, her students, and fellow teachers. After retiring, nothing pleased her more than to visit with her former students. Miss Peters was a valued member of the Friendsville Friends Meeting, where she served God and her church family faithfully and tirelessly. For many years she was the director of the Young Friends Camp which was held every summer in the Smoky Mountains. One of her greatest joys was traveling. She especially enjoyed trips with her church, her sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, and even as the chaperone for senior class trips. Our love goes with Joyce as she sets forth on this her final journey. The family will receive friends at the McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home on Friday, December 26, 2008, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, December 27, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Larry Fowler and Pastor Scott Knight officiating.
