Johnnie Matthew Newman

NEWMAN, Johnnie Matthew, age 78 of Alcoa, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Shannondale Health Care Center of Maryville. He graduated from Alcoa High School, where he excelled in football and basketball. He was a lifelong fan and supporter of the Alcoa High athletic program. He served in the U. S. Army for 3 years at the Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC, where he coordinated officers’ housing and administration. After his army tour, he had a 28 year career with Southern Central Bell Telephone Company. In the latter stages of this career, he began a successful business building homes and apartment complexes...which he continued after his retirement from the telephone company. Johnnie never met a stranger, had a classic sense of humor, and loved to travel. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church in Alcoa. As a youth, Johnnie often biked from Alcoa to Gatlinburg with weights on his bicycle. He was beloved by his family and many friends. He will be missed. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Oscar and Kitty Newman; brother, Harold Newman of CA; sisters, Kate Brock Hancock of Maryville, Christine Miller of Alcoa. Survivors include: sister, Lola Fogleman of Maryville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. James A. and Jacqueline Newman of Knoxville, Charles (“Buck”) and Jewell Newman of Maryville. Also, he had 16 nieces and nephews; plus 29 grandnieces and grandnephews; and loving companion, Jimmie Morris and longtime close friend, David Hancock. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2007, in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg Kelly officiating. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery.
