John Woodfin (Jack) Proffitt John Woodfin Proffitt, age 85 of Alcoa, TN, died on Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Jack was born in Cleveland, TN, on September 19, 1919, and the family moved to Maryville in November 1919, when the first Proffitt’s Department Store was opened on the corner of Main Street (now Broadway) and Brick Hill (now Cusick Street). He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Sherer Proffitt, who is the mother of his children; parents, David Wilson and Lillian Gray Webb Proffitt; brothers, Harwell Webb Proffitt, and Richard Neil Proffitt. Jack is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janet Schaffer Proffitt; daughter, Sherry Bonham of Maryville; daughter, Penny Piper of Walland; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Gray and Hugh Hunter of Birmingham, AL; son and daughter-in-law, John W. (Woody) Proffitt, Jr. and Janie of Townsend; grandchildren, Amy Gray Piper of Charlottesville, VA, Jackie Osterhaus and husband David of Sterling, IL, John Webb Hunter of Murfreesboro, TN, Grayson Hugh Hunter of Birmingham, AL, Richard Woodfin Proffitt and wife Misty of Louisville, TN, and Melissa Jayne Proffitt of Townsend; great grandchildren, Adam and Kristyn Gray Osterhaus of Sterling, IL, and Derek and Sean Proffitt of Maryville; and sister, Mary Lillian Proffitt Lyle. He was educated in the Maryville City School System, attending East Side Grammar School, Maryville Junior High School, and Maryville High School. He attended Maryville College for three years and transferred to the University of Tennessee in order to take business courses. He graduated from U. T. with a BS in Economics. While in the army for three years during World War II, he also attended Washington and Lee University and Susquehanna University. While stationed at Camp Pickett, VA, Jack was in charge of entertainment for our troops returning from battle. Jack is a 63 year member of the Maryville Kiwanis Club, has been a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church since 1927. He was an ordained elder and an ordained deacon. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004, at New Providence Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Emily J. Anderson and the Rev. Dr. Philip Bembower officiating.
