John Raymond Fletcher

November 21, 1938 — January 1, 2002

FLETCHER, Dr. John Raymond (Capt. USN retired) age 63 of Walland, passed away on January 1, 2002 at U. T. Medical Center. He lived in Walland, TN with his wife, Nan Evans Fletcher. Dr. Fletcher was last working at Blount Memorial Hospital before retiring in October, 2001. Dr. Fletcher, born November 21, 1938, in Tyler, Texas was known as a kind and compassionate man that cared greatly for others. He valued his relationships with friends and family. He loved fishing, gardening and cooking on the grill. His medical accomplishments include developing the Southern Alabama Rural Telemedicine Delivery System and shock trauma research for the U.S. Navy in Bethesda, MD, where he was Chief of Surgery, and the University of South Alabama in Mobile, AL where he was Associate Dean of Medicine. During his military service, Dr. Fletcher received a Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals for his service in Vietnam and the Legion of Merit medal for his lifetime achievement in the U.S. Navy. Dr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lucille Fletcher; father, DeWitt T. Fletcher; brother, Donald E. Fletcher; half brother, Kenneth W. Fletcher. He is survived by his wife, Nan Evans Fletcher of Walland; three sons and daughters-in-law from a previous marriage, John Raymond Fletcher, Jr. and Katheryn E. Fletcher of Washington, DC, Stephen Dewitt Fletcher and Wendy Worrall Fletcher of Silver Spring, MD, David Andrew Fletcher and Kim Klingenmaier Fletcher of Crownsville, MD; stepdaughters and husbands, Emy Poteet and Phillip, Wendy Mee and Tony; grandchildren, Shannon Fletcher, Caleigh Fletcher, Molly and Madelyn Poteet and Matthew Mee; brother, Jimmie Talmadge Fletcher of Houston, TX; sister, Mary E. Harvey of Garland, TX; half-sisters, Suzi Fletcher Sheffield, Barbara Fletcher; half brother, Mark Allen Fletcher. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Walland United Methodist Church with Rev. Eddie Collier officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Volunteer State Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Walland United Methodist Church, 309 E. Millers Cove Road, Walland, TN 37886.
