John Phipps Stewart

June 17, 1918 — March 13, 2005

Stewart, John Phipps, “J. P.”, age 86 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Maryville First Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School teacher and Head Usher, was a graduate of Carson Newman College, the University of Tennessee and was a veteran of World War II. He retired as Superintendent of Maryville City Schools after serving 23 years, he was also a former principal and teacher in the Maryville City School System and was a member of Maryville Kiwanis Club with over 40 years of perfect attendance. Mr. Stewart was an avid golfer and member of Green Meadow Country Club and played with the East Tennessee Senior Golf Association. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maude L. Stewart; parents, Plato E. and Mary Alice Phipps Stewart; 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Terry Stewart of Maryville; granddaughter, Catherine Stewart; sister, Edith Beard of Tampa, FL; sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Rev. Calvin Bailey of Knoxville; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at Maryville First Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Ballard officiating. The interment will follow in Grandview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30-3:00 p.m. Thursday at the Church. Memorials may be made to Maryville First Baptist Church, 202 W.
