John Magill of Sedona, of Arizona, died on September 25, 2006 at the age of 93. The Reverend John Magill, D.D. was born on September 13, 1913 in Whitinsville, Massachusetts, the son of Robert A. and Hattie (Pray) Magill. He was a graduate of Worcester (MA) high school, Maryville College (TN) and McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. He was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by Monmouth College (IL) in 1953. Dr. Magill served as pastor of Erie Chapel Presbyterian Church (Chicago), Lake View Presbyterian Church (Chicago, IL), Monmouth Presbyterian Church (Monmouth, IL), Abington Presbyterian Church (Abington, PA), Fairmount Presbyterian Church (Cleveland, OH); associate pastor of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (Huntingdon Valley, PA) where he was elected Associate Pastor Emeritus in 1980; pastoral associate of Faith Presbyterian Church (Cape Coral, FL). Dr. Magill and his wife, Louise Wells Magill, moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1980 from Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. They were members of the Faith Presbyterian Church. In 2003, the Magills moved to Sedona, Arizona and were members of the Church of the Red Rocks where Dr. Magill was named the “dean” of more than a dozen retired pastors who are members of the congregation. Dr. Magill was preceded in death by his wife Louise in May 2004. He is survived by a daughter Carol McDougald (John) of Sedona, Arizona, and by a son, Dr. David W. Magill (Judy) of Chicago, Illinois. He is also survived by his sister, Eleanor Jane Hickey of Hockessin, Delaware and five grandchildren, Lori Waterstraat, Kristen Gibowicz, Jennifer Magill, David McDougald and Robert McDougald. He also leaves eight great grandchildren, Hayden, Hope, Owen and Willow McDougald, Anna Grace and Allison Gibowicz, Graham and Sara Waterstraat. Memorial services will be held at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Cape Coral on October 15, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. Dr. Timothy Halverson and Dr. John Hunt will officiate. Interment will be at Maryville College Cemetery at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30th, Maryville, Tennessee, where Dr. Magill served on the Board of Trustees. Memorials in Dr. Magill’s name may be made to Faith Presbyterian Church (Cape Coral, FL), Abington Presbyterian Church (Abington, PA), Maryville College (Maryville, TN), Gulf Coast Village Foundation (Cape Coral, FL), the Church of the Red Rocks Building Fund (Sedona, AZ), or to a charity of one’s choice.
