John Joseph Craven, M.D. (81) died at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville, TN, on June 15, 2003. He was the youngest of the six children of Thomas Joseph Craven and Margaret Dugan. He was born in Memphis, TN, and graduated from Springhill College in Mobile, AL in 1942. After serving in the military, he entered UT Medical School, graduating in 1948. He interned at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis,TN and then served as the County Health Officer in Washington County, TN. After completing a residency in radiology at the Cleveland Clinic, he practiced radiology in Roswell, NM, and Odessa, TX, before moving to Knoxville, TN in 1957. He served as Chief of Radiology at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center from 1957 until he retired in 1985. Dr. Craven married Carolyn Gray Bickley in 1951. She was deceased in 1991. They were the parents of four daughters, Rebecca Carol, Bickley, Laura Elizabeth and Kathryn Gray. He is survived by his wife, Ellie Morrow Craven, of Maryville, TN, whom he married in 1994: daughters Dr. Rebecca Craven Wills, of Hershey, PA, and husband Dr. John Wills, Dr. Bickley Craven, of Abingdon, VA and special friend Pam Scott; Laura Craven Nantt of Dunlap, TN, and husband Larry Nantt, Kathryn Gray Craven Rebelo, of Lisbon, Portugal and husband Dr. Luis Paulo Rebelo: five granddaughters: Denise Young Nantt, Melissa Ann Wills, Marci Allison Wills, Christina Tess Rebelo and Anna Kathleen Rebelo: four stepchildren: Dr. Stephen E. Morrow and wife Remy Morrow of Potomac, MD, Kimberly Morrow Taff and husband William Bayly Taff of Atlanta, GA, John Kevin Morrow and wife Tina Morrow of Alpharetta, GA, Lisa Morrow Goeller and husband Morgan Goeller of Tucson, AZ; stepgrandchildren: Brianne Widney Morrow, Michael Scott Morrow, Jennnifer Cameron Morrow, Caroline Marie Morrow, Katharine Elise Taff, Rachel Lindsay Taff, David Richard Goeller: sister Mary Craven York, of Memphis, TN; brother-in-law Dr. Samuel T. Bickley and wife Sarah Bickley of High Point, NC, several nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. Dr. Craven was a past member of the Kiwanis Club of Maryville, past director of the Board of Governors of the Maryville Alcoa College Community Orchestra and numerous medical societies. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 21, at New Providence Presbyterian Church, 703 W. Broadway Avenue, Maryville, TN, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Emily Anderson and the Rev. Morgan Biggs officiating. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow the service at the church’s Westminster Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Foundation for the Blount County Public Library, 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville, TN 37804 or to a favorite charity.
