John Carlos Maciel, 62, of Maryville, passed away on Monday, December 13, 2010 at Blount Memorial Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and graduated from Providence College in 1970. During his childhood, he spent summers on the waters of Bristol, Rhode Island where his passion for boating and water skiing began. It was with this passion he built his first boat at age 12 and became a member of the American Water Ski Association that same year. Carlos felt blessed that his hobby led him to his career in the boating business, lasting over 20 years. He is believed to be the youngest of his era to be both a senior judge and senior driver for the professional water skiing circuit at the age of 20. Over the course of his professional driving career, Carlos drove for many Eastern Regional tournaments and even the 1976 Water Ski Nationals. In 2009, Carlos was awarded the American Water Ski Educational Foundation’s Hall of Fame Award of Distinction for his lifetime accomplishments in the business. He was a promotional boat distributor for the Northeast in the late 1970’s and eventually joined MasterCraft Boats in 1981 where he worked as the Marketing Director. After his time at Mastercraft, Carlos became President and CEO of Ski Supreme Boat Company in 1985. Most recently, Carlos was associated with Meadowland Property Management, working as a property manager for 15 years.
