Jean Warren Flickinger

Jean Warren Flickinger passed away on December 19, 2016. Jean was born in Akron, Ohio on November 19, 1928. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. After completing her education at Akron University, she taught first grade for several years. In 1952 she married Ted Flickinger and began a school of her own, having five children. She and her family lived in Washington D.C., Seattle, Washington, Oklahoma, New York City, and Memphis before settling in Maryville in 1960. They had five wonderful children to whom she devoted much of her time and talents. Jean was very active in New Providence Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, served as a deacon and an Elder, and was president of the Women's Association; her "Geneva Fellowship" group met for over 35 years. She greatly appreciated their support, as well as other friends, during the last several years. She was a leader in Girl Scouts and several Civic organizations: Junior Service League, Blount County Historical Society, Friends of the Library, etc. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Robert (Reggie) and Nellie Warren, sister Anna Rae Tomer and brother Robert (Bud) Warren. She is survived by her husband of 64 years Dr. Ted Flickinger; and their children: Ted Flickinger, Jr. [Julie Howard] of Knoxville, Jan Vinci [Mark] of New York City, Jill Coyle of Huntsville, Alabama, Tina Cook [Robert] of Laguna Beach, California and Dr. Jeff Flickinger [Melanie] of Knoxville; grandchildren: Austin and Cacie Coyle, Ryan and Logan Cook, Jordan and Kaitlyn Flickinger; two step grandchildren: Brandon Cook and Staci Arbogast of California; and two great-grandchildren: Gwen Arbogast and Quinn Cook. Friends are invited to join the family in a service of celebration of Jean's wonderful life on Tuesday, December 27 at 11 AM at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville. The family will receive friends after the service in Westminster Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church, 703 W Broadway Ave., Maryville, TN 37801 and Blount County Friends of the Library, 508 N. Cusick St., Maryville, TN 37804.
