HILL, James Clifford “Jimmy”, age 73 of Maryville, passed away Monday, May 5, 2003, at his home. He was a leading businessman, community leader and civic leader to Maryville and to Tennessee, he was a distinguished graduate of the Maryville High School class of 1947 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1951. While at Tennessee, he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, was a letterman in football, baseball and track and a member of the legendary UT National Championship football team in 1951. Mr. Hill was drafted by the Detroit Lions and played professional football with the Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers from 1951-1955. He was the owner/manager of Minton’s Department Store in Maryville from 1956-1987 which, under his able guidance, became a highly successful business. Jimmy served his country admirably as a Colonel in the United States Army Reserve from 1952-1982 and as Chairman of the Tennessee Selective Service System from 1980-1987. He generously contributed his time and considerable leadership skills as a member of the Maryville City Council and as Chairman of the Tennessee Conservation Commission. He made substantial contributions as a member of the Board of Directors of both the Blount National Bank/First American National Bank from 1972-2000. Mr. Hill was a member of Maryville First Baptist Church, an Eagle Scout, a member of Maryville Kiwanis and a member and past president of T-Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Hill (Edith Whisman) and grandson, Christopher James Murphy. Survivors include: wife, Jane Minton Hill; children, Eddie and Elizabeth Hill, Kathy and Brian Murphy and David Hill; grandchildren, Katie Hill and Russell Morrell, Elizabeth Paige Hill, Matthew and Michael Murphy; brother, Don Hill; sister-in-law, Helen Grubbs; several nieces and nephews. Friends will meet at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grandview Cemetery for a graveside service with Dr. John Sharp officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, Maryville.
