James Alfred Hammontree

James Alfred Hammontree, age 89 of Greenback, passed away May 14, 2019 at his home. He served honorably with the United States Navy. Serving in the United States Naval Fire Department from 1949-1951. He proudly served on the USS Hazelwood from 1951-1953. Al was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Pine Grove Presbyterian church and founding member of the Pine Grove Quartet. Al loved his Greenback Community and was a loyal fan of all Greenback Athletics even coaching recreation league basketball and baseball for many years. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; brother-in-law, Graham Cooper; son-in-law, Donnie Cope. He is survived by wife of 49 years, June Hammontree; sister, Thelma Cooper; son, Steve Hammontree; daughter, Mari Beth Hammontree; stepdaughters, Gaye Cope and Cathy Goddard; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Friday, May 17, 2019 from 4-6:00 p.m. at Pine Grove Presbyterian Church with the service to follow at 6:00 p.m. with the Rev. Ron Sabo officiating. The family will meet for a graveside service on Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at Pine Grove Presbyterian Cemetery. Special thanks to Blount Memorial Hospice and grandsons, Jason Goddard and Clay Cope for their devoted care during his brief illness.
