July 1, 2006 Hugh M. Calloway, Sr., age 82, founder of Calloway Oil Company and E-Z Stop Foodmarts Inc., died Friday, June 30, 2006, at Blount Memorial Hospital. A native of Lenoir City and graduate of Lenoir City High School, he was a Navy Pilot in World War II. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1947 and was a life-long fan of UT football and basketball. Mr. Calloway worked for Phillips Petroleum Company for 10 years in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Georgia before returning to East Tennessee to start his own business in Blount County. Mr. Calloway was a life member of the Maryville Kiwanis Club, served as President of the Tennessee Oil Marketer’s Association, served on the Board of Directors for the former Bank of Maryville and First Tennessee Bank, was a member of the Maryville Regional Planning Commission, and served as Chairman of the Zoning Commission Board of Appeals. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Maryville, serving in many capacities. He also served on the Board of Trustees of the Holston Conference Colleges as well as the Executive Committee of Hiwassee College. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Edgar Roger and Annie Rebecca Foster Calloway, brothers, Edgar, Foster, and Tom Calloway, and grandson, Michael Martin Johnson. Survivors include his beloved wife of 58 years, Helen Mills Calloway, of Maryville, daughters, Janis Calloway, of Maryville, Jean Stinson and husband, Richard, of Houston, Texas, Carol Hunt and husband, Tommy, of Maryville, son, Hugh M. (Marty) and wife, Kellie, of Maryville. He will also be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Cathy, Sally, and Mary Beth Stinson of Houston, Texas, Julia, Emily, and Laura Hunt of Maryville, and Bryan, Matthew, and Anna Calloway of Maryville. He is also survived by 2 sister-in-laws, Nancy Calloway, of Knoxville, and Mary Alice Calloway, of Tuscon, Arizona. Funeral services will be at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, July 2, at Maryville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Carroll and Rev. Brenda Carroll officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 4:30 at the church. The interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, at Grandview Cemetery.
