Horace Robert Mccammon

H. Robert McCammon, 'Bob' passed away peacefully on September 3, 2019 at Brookdale Assisted living in Maryville. He was 83.

Bob was born in Knoxville on November 18, 1935 to Horace and Annie McCammon. He attended Georgia Tech receiving a bachelors in Mechanical Engineering. He assisted in the design of the Mercury Space Program. Bob received a commission in the United States Air Force and achieved the rank of Major. While serving at Greenville Air Force Base in Mississippi, he met and married Bettie Diggs and they were married in 1960. He returned to Maryville and became the manager of McCammon Motor and Equipment. In 1961, he joined the Kiwanis of Maryville, becoming President in 1969.

In 1967 Bob and Bettie adopted Rob. In 1971, Bob took a position with First Federal Savings and Loan and would become a Senior Vice President there at the time of his retirement in 1993. During this period he was recognized and served on the Federal Home Loan Bank Board of Cincinnati.

Bob was also closely associated with the Blount County Fire Department becoming the second Fire Chief in the 1980's. It was with great pride he served and did so for nearly 20 years.

Lifelong member of New Providence Presbyterian Church he served in numerous roles.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Bettie. He is succeeded by his son Robert and his wife, Cynthia McCammon; his Grandchildren William Corey McCammon, Morgan Nicole Avery and her husband Brandon Avery and Stephen Kyle; and his Great-Grandchildren, Calliope Mae Avery and Owen Diggs Avery.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 10:00-11:00 AM at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home with the service at 11:00 AM. The internment will be at Magnolia Cemetery immediately following the service.

He led an amazing life of service to his family, country and his community.
