Henry Herb Stoner

Henry H. Stoner, Retired Engineer, Rotarian, and Member of the Shannondale Community in Maryville Born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania on October 3, 1920, Henry was the oldest son of Loose Kise and Bessie Catherine Stoner. Henry lived and went to high school in Pottsville, PA. Henry later received his Bachelor of Science degree at Penn State, College Park, with a major in chemical engineering. Henry met Frances Pouns from Dallas, Texas, at a summer school at Penn State. Hank and Fran married on August 22, 1942. World War II framed their future. Hank enlisted in the army but was drafted into the top secret Manhattan Project. In 1944, Hank and Fran moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee where they lived for the next 63 years. In Oak Ridge Hank performed start-up, operation, and manufacturing operations at the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant until 1958 when he transferred to Y-12 where he oversaw manufacturing management until his retirement in 1983. Hank contributed to the Oak Ridge community throughout his life. As the young father of four daughters, he served as president of the Atomic City Aquatic Club and coached the United Church Girls Basketball Team. He was president of grade school, junior high, and senior high school P.T.A.s. In 1970, he chaired the city fund raising effort of the NABOR campaign to build the Oak Ridge Civic Center. He headed the United Fund campaign for the Union Carbide plants in 1972; was president of the Anderson County chapter of the American Heart Association from 1989-1992 and he served on its Board of Directors for 26 years. He was on the Board of Directors and treasurer of the Oak Ridge Art Center. He attended the United Church and the United Methodist Church. There Hank was active in church administration and in the Keystone program for aging adults. He sang in the choirs of both churches. Hank chaired and served on various committees of the Oak Ridge Rotary Club. In 1992 he initiated an orientation program for training Rotary Ambassadorial Scholars from Tennessee, Kentucky, and several surrounding states in preparation for their year of study abroad. For this, he was awarded the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service in 1996. He continued to serve in this position until 2007. Hank enjoyed travel, family reunions, sports, and the Lady Vols basketball team which he attended from their very first year until the 2011-12 season. At the Shannondale of Maryville Retirement Community, Hank made many new friends. He found there a community of interesting, vital, and caring people who contributed to his sense of belonging and joy over the last 6 years. He is survived by his wife, Frances, four daughters: Lynn Stoner of Chandler, Arizona; Janet Stoner and Alicia Crew of Tallahassee, Florida; Shirley Stoner and husband Dean Honeycutt of Johnson City, Tennessee; and Karen Minser and husband William Minser of Maryville, Tennessee. Grandchildren are Bethany Love and husband Chad Love of Maryville, Tennessee; Kate Briskie and husband Matt Briskie of Raleigh, North Carolina; Brian Jessee and wife Erin Jessee of Littleton, Colorado; Brett Honeycutt and wife Corrina Honeycutt of Manhattan, Kansas.Great grandsons are Grayson Love and Spencer Love. Sister and brothers are: Jane Andrews of Rock Springs, Georgia; John K. Stoner of Allentown, Pennsylvania; and Robert K. Stoner of Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Hank loved a very special group of people from Home Watch Care Givers that became part of the family through their compassion, care, and love for both Hank and Fran. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 29 at 3:00 in the chapel at the Shannondale Retirement Community. In addition, a Celebration of Life service will be held in March. More details will be determined at a later time.
