Helen Mills Calloway

July 10, 1926 — December 25, 2016

Helen Mills Calloway, age 90, died peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2016, at Blount Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born in Corbin, Kentucky, she grew up in Lenoir City where she met her husband of 58 years, Hugh Calloway. She was a proud alumna of Lenoir City High School, Ward-Belmont College in Nashville and the University of Tennessee, where she graduated in 1947. She worked side by side with her husband Hugh as they raised four children and established a successful business in Maryville, Tenn., Calloway Oil Company. She was the heart and soul of Calloway Oil, where she was known affectionately over the years by its many employees as "Mrs. C." She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church, an avid bridge player and enjoyed attending UT football and basketball games with her husband, both devoted Vol fans. To anyone who met her and to her many friends throughout life, she was the definition of a gracious, loving woman. To her family, she was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loving wife. She will be remembered as always having a smile on her face and a story to tell, and she inspired and shaped the lives of those she held dear in ways that will live on for years and years. She lived out her later years keeping up with her four children, ten grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly and was so proud of. She was cared for by many loving souls whom she thought of as her "angels." Her family, friends and caregivers brought her much joy throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Hugh Calloway; parents, Zora Alice and B. E. Mills; brother Glenn Mills; and grandson, Michael Martin Johnson. Survivors include daughters Janis Calloway, of Maryville; Jean Calloway and husband, Richard Stinson, of Houston, Texas; Carol Hunt and husband, Tommy, of Maryville; son, Hugh M. (Marty) Calloway and wife, Kellie, of Friendsville. She will also be sadly missed by her adoring grandchildren: Cathy Schuetze, Sally Stinson, Mary Eagleton, Julia Hunt Langston, Emily Hunt Bales, and Laura Hunt, and Bryan, Matthew and Anna Calloway and her great grandchildren, Bailey Eagleton and Charlotte, Cate, and Ben Schuetze. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 27, at Maryville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Parker Benson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. There will be a private interment for family before the church service at Grandview Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Maryville First United Methodist Church, 804 Montvale Station Road, Maryville, TN 37803.
