Helen Johnson Atchley

December 31, 1916 — April 29, 2009

Helen Johnson Atchley, age 92, of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at 4:00 pm at BMH Morningview Transitional Care Center where she was a resident. Preceded in death by husband, Shirley H. Atchley, they were not only marriage partners for 59 years but were partners in numerous farm-related businesses and real estate projects and worked together in the J & K Stores. A graduate of Maryville High School, Helen attended Carson-Newman College, before returning to work for more than 25 years in the family owned J & K Super Store in Alcoa and the J & K Feed Store on Court Street. When she and husband Shirley retired April 1976, they enjoyed 20 years of travel and good health until he died May 25, 1996. A lifelong Baptist Helen was a member of First Baptist Church Maryville for 84 years. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Walker and Gussie Lee Kidd Johnson, founders of the J & K Super Stores; sisters, Ruby Lee Johnson Wetzler, Evelyn Johnson Cate, and Sara Lou Johnson Pryor, and brother, Charles W. Johnson. Survivors include: daughter, S. M. Atchley, brother-in-law, Wendell D. Atchley, sister-in-law, Grace Atchley, several nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Very special thanks to the nurses and staff of BMH Morningview Transitional Care Center, where Helen resided the past 30 months and to BMH Hospice. A memorial service will be Friday, May 8, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home with receiving friends immediately following the service. Rev. S.M. Atchley and Hospice Chaplain Rev. Willa Estell officiating. Friends are also welcome to call at the family home at their convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Good Neighbors of Blount County, 1021 Hampshire Drive, Maryville 37801 or UTMC Department of Pastoral Care, 1924 Alcoa Hwy, Knoxville 37920.
