DICKSON, Helen Giffen, age 88, died at Shannondale Health Care Center on July 15, 2004. She was born on March 22, 1916 in Moundsville, West Virginia. She moved to Knoxville in 1918 when her father, Dr. James Kelly Giffen, became President of Knoxville College and she moved to Maryville when he became Professor of Old Testament at Maryville, College. She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1933 and from the University of Tennessee in 1937. She had a long teaching career in the Knoxville, Knox County, and Blount County School Systems, primarily at Eagleton Village School in Blount County. She served in the American Red Cross during World War II. She had a very deep Christian faith. She joined New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville in 1936 where she taught in the Church school. One of her pre-school pupils was Lamar Alexander. Her husband, Reps Jones Dickson, preceded her in death in 1957. He was the golf pro at Green Meadows Golf Club. Ann Baker Furrow was among the distinguished golfers whom he coached. Survivors include her son, Richard M. Dickson of Auburn, AL; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Robert K. Dickson and Melinda Dickson of Farragut; granddaughters, Margaret Dickson and Rachel Dickson; brother, Lowell Giffen of Knoxville. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at New Providence Presbyterian Church with Rev. Steve Musick officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church following the service.
