Grace Proffitt Mcarthur

May 12, 1913 — March 16, 2008

MCARTHUR, Grace Proffitt, age 94 of Maryville, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008. She was a graduate of Maryville College in 1935 and attended New York Theological Seminary. She was Director of Christian Education at the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA; the Sewickley Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA, and of her home church New Providence Presbyterian of which she was a member since 1921. Other work included teaching Christian Education at Maryville College, college/parish programs at Home Avenue and Sunnybrook Chapels, kindergarten at Home Avenue, and elementary education in Maryville City Schools. She also served as librarian at Friendsville and Walland High School. She was an elder at New Providence Presbyterian Church, past president of Chilhowee Club, member of DAR, and Blount County Historic Trust. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Lowry and Estelle Snodgrass Proffitt; her sister, Ruth MacCalmont, her husband of 58 years, David L. McArthur, and her son, David Graham McArthur. Survivors include a sister, Louise Haviland and brother-in-law Wayne; her daughter, Alida Graves; son, Fred McArthur and daughter-in-law Wanda; son, Stainton McArthur and daughter-in-law Gail; eight grandchildren, Kathleen Mosher and husband Tom, Elisabeth Bellah and husband Eric, Lauren Blair and husband Peter, Cheryl Fluhr and husband Robert, Heather McArthur, Nikki McArthur, David Graves and wife Katie, and Jonathan Graves; six great grandchildren, Caroline and Hannah Mosher, Grace and Anne Lauren Bellah, Joseph Blair, Mikayla Graves and Parker Fluhr. A memorial service will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at 4:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Emily Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church immediately following the service. Interment for family members at Grandview Cemetery will be held prior to the memorial service.
