Geneva Hazel Maxey McArthur - Geneva Maxey McArthur passed away on March 16, 2018 surrounded by family. Geneva was born 97 years ago in the community of Procter on Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina, which is now a part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She was one of twelve children born to Thomas Edward and Vincie Sneed Maxey. She spent her childhood in Regal, North Carolina, before leaving home at age 19 to pursue a career in nursing. She receive her RN from Ft. Sanders Hospital Nursing School and later went to work at ALCOA, Inc. where she met Donnell McArthur. She and Don married in 1944 shortly before Don enlisted in the Navy. At the close of WWII, she lived for a short time in the Panama Canal Zone where Don was stationed. They returned to Maryville after the war and began their family. They had 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren all of whom benefitted greatly from her tender love and guidance. Maxey, as she was known by her friends, was a nurse for many years, having worked at the old Doctors Hospital and Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a loving and giving person who often provided home nursing assistance to those in need. She always put others needs ahead of her own. She was preceded in death by her husband Donnell, daughter Judy Hackworth and grandson Curtis McArthur. She is survived by her sister Virginia Moore of Andrews, North Carolina. She is also survived by son Steve McArthur and his wife Jan, son John McArthur and his wife Polly, daughter Donna Booher and her husband Bob, daughter Ruth Harper and her husband Edward, by grandchildren, Andrew Hackworth (Janet), Elizabeth Maxey Long (Forrest), Catherine McArthur, Grayson McArthur (Colleen), Moriah McArthur, Emma Dickerson (Will), Sarah Salerno (Jeff), Robert Booher, Mary Chad Harper (Chad Siderius), Hannah Harper (Dylan Deponte) and by 8 great-grandchildren Lauren and Tyler Hackworth, George and Caroline Long, Huck and Evans Dickerson and Coleman and Eliza Grace Salerno. She was an active member of New Providence Presbyterian Church for over 70 years. A memorial service celebrating Maxeys life will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville at 10:30 a.m. on April 14, 2018. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Providence Presbyterian Church, the Foothills Land Conservancy, Tomatla United Methodist Church (c/o Ben Joyner, 104 Moose Creek Ln., Marble, NC 28905), Blount County Food Connection or Good Neighbors of Blount County.
