Fred Millard Patty, Jr., age 68, died 10 April 2014 peacefully at his home in Greenback, TN. He was the son of Fred Millard Patty, Sr. and Bessie Pauline Coltharp Patty who preceded him in death. He was a 1964 graduate of Everett High School before entering the Marine Corps achieving the rank of Sergeant. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the 3rd Marine Division from 1966 to 1970. Returning home to Blount County, he was employed by ALCOA for several years before joining L&N/CSX Railroad in Etowah, TN and for a while in Louisville, KY. He retired from CSX after 30 years of service. He was an avid birder and a self taught naturalist. It takes great patience to become proficient in identifying bird calls and he definitely had that patience. He loved being outdoors whether hiking, bicycling, kayaking or fishing from his pontoon. He is survived by five devoted sisters: Joan Pettitt (Leon) Plano, TX, Bess McBrayer Maryville, TN, Midge Wooldridge Santa Teresa, NM, Freda Kempson Dawsonville, GA and Linda Kidd (Don) Maryville, TN; nieces, Julie Pettitt Mahan (Tony) Prosper, TX and Laurie Pettitt Gough (Richard) Cumming, GA; nephews, William Neal McBrayer (Kelly) Brentwood, TN, Brett McBrayer (Laura) Knoxville, Steve McBrayer (Dara) Bristol, TN and several great nieces and great nephews. He was also preceded in death by his nieces, Audrey Kay Kempson, Erin Gail Kidd and great niece, Elizabeth Grace McBrayer. An outdoor gathering for family and close friends will be held later to scatter his ashes. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Smokies or the Audubon Society.
