Frances W. Volk, age 93 of Alcoa, passed away March 16, 2013 at Shannondale Retirement Community, Maryville, Tennessee.She was preceded in death by her parents Ned E. Waith and Flora Kessler Waith; infant daughter, Cynthia Ann and brother Frank Waith. Survivors include husband of 70 years, Romer Volk, sisters Lillian Strickland, Jamestown, NY and Bertha Taylor and husband Ted Taylor of Chocowinity, NC. Daughters and sons-in-law Elaine and Donald Dawson of Woodinville,WA, and Carol and Tommy George of Somerville, TN. Five grandchildren: Matthew Dawson, Seattle, WA; Tim and Becca Dawson, Kenmore, WA. David and Hailey Dawson, Santa Ana, CA. Leigh Carol Dawson, Seattle, WA, and Austin George, Chicago IL and great grandsons Caleb Dawson, Levi Dawson, Chase Dawson and Lance Dawson. Mrs. Volk graduated from Falconer, NY High School, received her B.A. from Houghton College and Graduate degrees, M.S. & M.S. of Ed from the University of Tennessee. Following her marriage in 1943, she taught in Panama, NY, Riverside, NJ, Niagara Falls, NY, Alcoa, TN, and Maryville High School retiring in 1981. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Alcoa, serving in many positions- United Methodist Women, Chm. of the Council of Ministries, Lay Leader, Member of the Administrative Board and Staff Parrish Committee. She taught Sunday School, including a Junior and Senior High Class, the Pathfinders Class of young adults and the Christian Fellowship Class of older adults. Mrs. Volks interests included Bible study, reading and travel.The funeral will be held at Alcoa First United Methodist Church at 2:00, Tuesday, March 19 with the family receiving friends from 12:30 to 2:00 prior to the service. Interment will be private at Grandview Cemetery , McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home in charge. The officiating minister will be Rev. Dwight Kilbourne. Memorials to First UM Church Alcoa building fund.
