Etheridge Byrd

September 11, 1921 — October 3, 2014

Etheridge Byrd, age 93 of Alcoa, passed away Friday, October 3, 2014, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Huntsville, TN. Mr. Byrd served with the U. S. Army during World War II, where he served in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Southern France, Central Europe, Rome-Arno and Ardennes Rhineland. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 1 Silver Star and 2 Bronze Stars. He was one of 44 veterans honored in 2006 by French officials for his service in France during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Byrd and Lillie Cross Byrd; brother, Hurstle Byrd; sisters, Nell Davis (Clark) and Verlia Boyatt (Glenn). He is survived by his wife, Sonia Byrd; son and daughter-in-law, David Byrd and Rebecca Byrd; his beloved grandson, Christopher Byrd; and by many other dear relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 6, 2014, at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home, 220 W. Broadway, Maryville, TN, with Rev. Freeman Tomlin officiating. The entombment, with Military Honors, will follow at Grandview Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. Monday at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home.
