Elizabeth (Libby) Carolyn Gillespie Brinegar Libby Brinegar was released from this life Thursday, October 25, 2007, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her parents J.C. (Jesse) Gillespie and Beulah Grant Gillespie and her husband Haywood (Woody) Cumbie Brinegar. She is survived by her daughters Lisa (Tom) Brinegar Slagle of Knoxville and Barbara (Phill) Brinegar Burgess of Franklin, grandsons Beau Burgess, Woody Burgess and Jackson Slagle, and sisters Martha Gillespie McKune Fish Hook, South Africa and Barbara Gillespie Jarrett of Maryville. Born in 1930, Libby grew up in Maryville, graduated from Maryville High School, attended Randolph-Macon College in VA and graduated from the University of Tennessee where she was a member or Alpha Omega Pi Sorority. She was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, volunteer, and teacher. She gave time to the community through many organizations including PTA, the Girl Scouts of America, Jr. Service League, Jr. Chilhowee Club, New Providence Presbyterian Church, and The Blount County Girl’s Club. Mrs. Brinegar taught sixth grade at Sam Houston Elementary and Maryville Middle school. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church. Libby lived her life as a giver, giving of her sweet, sweet spirit to her family, many friends, students, church and community. The family would like to thank the many care givers who became like her family in the last years of her life during her illness. A celebration of the life of Elizabeth Gillespie Brinegar will be held at New Providence Presbyterian Church at 703 West Broadway in Maryville on Saturday, November 3, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Emily Anderson presiding. The family will receive friends immediately following in the Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Libby’s name to New Providence Presbyterian Church, 703 West Broadway, Maryville, TN 37801 or Bible Study Fellowship International, 19001 Huebner Rd., San Antonio, Texas 78258.
