WILEY JR., Edward Emerson “Ned”, of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003, at Asbury Acres Healthcare Center in Maryville, TN. He was a graduate of Central High School in Knox County, TN, received his A.B. from Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA, B.D. from Duke Divinity School in Durham, NC, M. A. from Yale Divinity School, New Haven, CT, Ph.D. Degree from Duke Graduate School and his D.D. Degree from Emory and Henry College. Dr. Wiley, a retired United Methodist minister, was a member of First United Methodist Church of Maryville, TN. He served the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church in many capacities, beginning with the Jefferson City Circuit in Jefferson County, TN in 1937. He and his wife, Frances, then served the St. Elmo Church and Centenary Church in Chattanooga, First Church of Maryville, TN, Broad Street Church in Kingsport, TN, State Street Church in Bristol, was Superintendent of the Abingdon District in VA, and First United Methodist in Newport, TN, before returning to First United Methodist of Maryville to serve as Minister of Visitation. He also served as Chaplain at Asbury Acres Health Care. Dr. Wiley served as president, past president, and board member of many different organizations during his ministry. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of Emory and Henry College, Tennesee Wesleyan College and Hiwassee College, he was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the Personnel Committee Conference Council on Ministeries. He enjoyed golf, tennis and swimming. Dr. Wiley was preceded in death by his father, Edward Emerson Wiley; mother, Lucy Osment Wiley; one brother; two half sisters; grandfather, Ephraim Emerson Wiley, the second president of Emory and Henry College; grandmother, Elizabeth Reeves Wiley, founder of the Holston Methodist Home for Children in Greeneville, TN. He is survived by his wife, Frances Tittsworth Wiley; brother, Frances A. Wiley and wife, Libby of California; and a beloved sister-in-law, Elizabeth Tittsworth of Jefferson City, TN. Funeral services will be held at Maryville First United Methodist Church in Maryville, TN at 7:00 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2003 with Rev. James R. Green and Rev. Sterling Turner officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the Church. Family and friends will meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lynnhurst Cemetery for the interment service with Dr. Ed Eldridge officiating. The Wesley Mitchell Sunday School Class will serve as Honorary Pall Bearers. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to the church of your choice in memory of Dr. Wiley.
